THE ARTS

Art is an integral part of a Carpe Diem student’s week and is utilized in all aspects of learning. From building miniature tree houses (sculpture) as a math project, to creating the scary Halloween spider paper mache for our Harvest Evening, it‘s everywhere in the life of a Carpe Diem child.

Every week, Janice Campbell instructs Carpe Diem students in art at the Jumping Mouse Art Studio. In the Jumping Mouse Art Studio, projects are tied to the seasons, or to a theme unit currently being studied, or just creation itself—dragon puppets, leaf prints, exploring color, composition, sculpture, painting with a variety of mediums, or simply drawing from nature.

Janice Campbell has been an artist-represented free-lance illustrator for the likes of The Seattle Children’s Theater, Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, The New York Rangers, The National Psoriasis Foundation, Seattle Opera, The Disney Corp, and The Harvard Business Review. She is an active member of the artistic community on Vashon Island and her work is frequently seen on gallery walls throughout town. She enjoys trying new mediums, experimenting with mixing mediums, and the challenge of problem-solving to create new art projects for the Carpe Diem students.

I have always loved making art projects, so teaching kids what I love to do is a joy. "I have always loved making art projects, so teaching kids what I love to do is a joy." —Janice Campbell, teacher
